  65. Catherine Colman, the marketing manager at Step Ahead Software believes

  67. that, "the internet is bringing computers out of the exclusive domain of

  69. technical people and into the lives of everyday people. Web page designers

  71. and graphic artists can now have a tool which will provide levels of visual

  73. expression similar to that seen by people in other forms of media such as

  75. TV and magazines. Designers can now feel that their creativity is not

  81. The designs are displayed on the internet using the anFX Java applet (a
  82.  
  83. small Java program) but the designs are built without writing a single line
  84.  
  85. of Java code. anFX does not even require the use of Sun's JDK (Java
  86.  
  87. Developer Kit). Instead, a Windows based visual design tool, the "anFX
  88.  
  89. designer", is included in the package. This enables non programmers to
  90.  
  91. visually build a design and then generate the special data files required
  92.  
  93. by the anFX applet.

  97. Traditional bitmap animations can take a long time to download and today's
  98.  
  99. internet user is expecting more eye catching effects in less time. When an
  100.  
  101. internet user opens a web page which uses the anFX applet the small applet
  102.  
  103. code is downloaded once along with the data file for that page's anFX
  104.  
  105. design. The applet then comes alive! As the user moves to other pages on
  106.  
  107. that site with other anFX designs the applet code is reused and only the
  108.  
  109. new data file for that page is downloaded. The result is a user who spends
  110.  
  111. more time absorbing information and less time waiting around for large
  112.  
  113. downloads. Of course traditional multi bitmap animations are supported by
  114.  
  115. the tool but these only need to be used sparingly as the majority of the
  116.  
  117. effects can be created by moving, sliding and fading text and shape
  118.  
  119. objects.

  123. The concept and specification for the tool have been evolving at Step Ahead
  124.  
  125. Software for many months now. Catherine said, "It came about when one of
  126.  
  127. our engineers, wrote some flashy, eye catching Java applets which did not
  128.  
  129. require large multiple bitmaps to be downloaded. The applets worked fine
  130.  
  131. but creating and aligning objects in the applet by changing the Java code
  132.  
  133. and then recompiling was tedious and meant only Java programmers could do
  134.  
  135. it. So we made the applet more generic by getting its instructions from
  136.  
  137. small data files and then we built the anFX visual designer so that anyone
  138.  
  139. could build the data files." Much of the content of the applet's are text
  140.  
  141. and simple graphical shapes and in some cases a few small bitmap images so
  142.  
  143. they download fast but it's the effect that can be applied to them that
  144.  
  145. makes the applets so impressive and not unlike modern TV and magazine ads".

  179. Currently the objects supported by the anFX applet are text, rectangles,
  180.  
  181. ellipses, lines, images (bitmaps) and animated image sequences (traditional
  182.  
  183. bitmap animations). Any object can have a path associated with it. The
  184.  
  185. object travels along that path repeatedly and at a specified speed. All
  186.  
  187. objects except images can have their colour and the fading of that color
  188.  
  189. specified. A "phaser object" is attached to these objects and works like an
  190.  
  191. electronically controlled motor turning a dimmer dial on a light switch.
  192.  
  193. The phasers can be synchronized to a master phaser to give a synchronized
  194.  
  195. flowing effect in the objects but anFX has to be experienced to reveal its
  196.
